Japan is an intriguing destination for foreign tourists, and offers a wide range of attractions.

Japan offers visitors a diverse range of attractions. The country is made up of islands that cover an area that stretches from the snow capped mountains of Hokkaido (the northernmost island) to the sunny beaches of Okinawa (the southernmost island.) The culture of Japan is similarly diverse - being a unique blend of the old and the new, tradition and innovation.

See Modern Japan

While Japan has several large, modern cities - Osaka, Nagoya and Kobe for example - the capital city of Tokyo provides tourists with possibly the broadest introduction to Japanese modernity. Visitors can shop for the latest gadgets and electronics in the Akihabara district - also known as "Electric Town" - browse huge department stores and go designer shopping in Ginza, see cutting-edge fashion styles in Harajuku, and view skyscrapers and neon in Shinjuku.

Experience the Traditional Side of Japan

Known as the "city of a thousand temples," the ancient capital of Kyoto is actually home to 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as three palaces and several museums. Kyoto has more World Heritage Sites per square inch than any other city. In the Gion district, tourists can see Geisha wearing traditional Japanese dress. To fully experience the traditional side of Japan, staying at a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) is recommended.

Consider When to Visit Japan

Different festivals take place throughout Japan according to season. In the winter months visitors can see Tokyo's elaborate New Year firework displays, or go to the February Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) in Sapporo, on the island of Hokkaido. Spring sees many parties and festivals - particularly in more traditional areas such as Kyoto and Kamakura - to celebrate the arrival of the cherry blossom season (sakura), and summer is the time of Buddhist three day long Obon festivals, which honour the dead. Obon festivals take place all over Japan, and in the Tokyo area there are firework displays almost every weekend in summer.

Tourists Should Avoid Busy Travel Times

Avoid traveling during National Holidays - especially “Golden Week” between April 29th and May 5th - since hotels are likely to be fully booked, transportation fares higher, and attractions more crowded at this time.

The Japan Rail Pass

A "Japan Rail Pass" provides unlimited access to the fast, efficient and comprehensive Japanese rail system - including the high speed "bullet trains" (shinkansen.) Passes are valid for 7, 14 or 21 days, and they must be purchased outside of Japan.
