A new Rough Guide to Japan is in all good bookshops, but don't forget the D.K. Eyewitness Guide and The Guide to Unforgettable Walks, all providing excellent information.

The new Rough Guide to Japan is now available from bookshops or from the Rough Guide Bookshop Online. It provides all the advice and information the traveller will need, from getting to Japan by air, ship, or by travelling overland, to the best places to eat and drink. The section on accommodation is particularly good, and the guide to best places in which to shop covers everything from cheap to chic. The in-depth coverage of Japan's history, politics and religions, its movies and music is all encompassing.

Sight-seeing is treated in the Rough Guide's usual manner, a comprehensive look at all the major sites as well as those off the beaten track, from Hokkaido in the North to the island of Okinawa. There are maps of all the main towns and tourist destinations, plus colour maps of the Tokyo subway system and the Osaka rail network.

And an esoteric extra this, the full-colour sections introduces the reader to manga and anime (or, as some will have it, comic strips), festivals and gardens.

Unforgettable Walks to Take Before you Die

A new title in the series of books covering essential experiences around the world written by Photographers and Writers Steve Watkins and Clare Jones. They have selected 30 of the world's most inspiring walks each one of which can be done over a two-week holiday. The book covers a wide range of locations from Boston to Peru, and Yellowstone National Park to Kyoto.

Steve Watkins travelled to Kyoto during the cherry blossom season and he writes enthusiastically about the Temples of Kyoto walk. These Buddhist temples and shrines fall within the Philosopher's Path – a walk he recommends. Available from all major book stores and from BBC Books Online Shop.

Eyewitness Travel Guide to Tokyo

The popularity of Tokyo means that this fascinating city needs its own guide book, and Dorling Kindersley Travel has come up- with this excellent guide to the creativity, culture and economy of Tokyo. This mega city is the seat of the government, an economic powerhouse in the global financial market, and a city at the cutting edge of fashion.

There are walking tours to take you to the heart of this enigmatic city, through neon-bathed streets lined with skyscrapers, the labyrinthine Shinjuku district and the shrine complex of Meiji Jingu.

From all good bookshops or from the Dorling Kindersley Online Shop.
